“TUNASLAM CORNER”
Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
For local fishing in Santa Monica, Long Beach, Catalina and San Clemente Islands. 03-04-10
Spring is in the air, as the Yellowtail went off down in San Diego, off the Coronado Islands, several ¾ day boats catching over a 100 Tails at North Island. The signs are good for some early yellowtail putting on a show at Catalina and San Clemente Islands soon. Of course the beginning of the Fred Hall Show almost always kicks off the White Seabass at Catalina.
That darn weatherman just won’t give us a break on the weekends, however, even the forecast for wind and rain did not keep those off the water this week, given the pent up demand for Rockfish. Those bottom grabbers consisting of Big Reds, Coppers and Bocaccio did not disappoint, as both Sport Boats and Private boaters found them on a serious chew on opening day Monday and everyday since.
Speaking of the Fred Hall Show, I spent the day there on Wednesday, after first attending a Tailgate party over at the Pierpoint Landing Boat Dock, hosted by Billy, displaying his newly re-furbished six pac charter boat “Spectra”. This boat is setup for some serious one day and multi day fishing offshore and the local islands. An enormous refrigerated fish hold, 40 scoop bait tank, to go with two slammers for those longer trips. Plenty of elbow room, could easily fish 15-20 anglers.
The Fred Hall show started off with a bang at a little after 2pm, with a few thousand folks waiting in line to get in and take advantage of all those tackle items on sale. I re-newed my United Anglers membership for $40 and was given free entrance to the show and $50 worth of coupons to use on purchases from various vendors inside. Each coupon was worth $5 dollars off, on only a $20 minimum purchase, that’s a 25% discount on top of the already lowered prices. You can barely walk into any exhibit and not find a $20 item you could use, and only pay $15 for it upon using the coupon. I used one at Turners, Fisherman’s Landing and several other well known vendors. Lots of good values on terminal tackle, as well as great prices on Fishing Rods and Reels. Check it out and be sure to visit Ron or another Moderator at the AllCoast Booth. I’ll be helping Ron all day Sunday. Look forward to putting a face to many of you posters and lurkers out there. Sign the register for a chance to win a brand new 2 speed Okuma Reel.

Big Reds go off at San Clemente Island

The winter bass bite did not take any back seat to the targeted rockfish, with plenty of Mixed Calico and Sand Bass being caught this week.

San Clemente Island
The First String fished the Island on Wednesday after limiting out on rockfish and 40 pound Halibut. They looked around for some Yellowtail and found only Bonito and more rockfish.
The Sport Boat Pursuit on a full day trip fished the island with 20 anglers catching 20 Calico Bass, 77 Sheephead, 71 Whitefish, 35 Bocaccio, 193 Rockfish, 8 Sculpin, and 19 Red Snapper. They ran again Wednesday 03-03-10 with 25 anglers catching 2 Calico Bass, 25 Sheephead, 29 Whitefish, 38 Bocaccio, 157 Rockfish, 5 Sculpin, 40 Perch, 26 Red Snapper, and 10 Bolina.
