“TUNASLAM CORNER”
Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
For local fishing in Santa Monica, Long Beach, Catalina and San Clemente Islands. 01-28-10
According to the tide schedule, and full moon, this should be an incredible opportunity to fish the highs and lows of the tides, with monumental swings during prime fishing times. See my table at the end of this report. The weather outlook is favorable, the Bass and Halibut appear to be on the chew, while the water clarity and temps are recovering from the recent storms. So get out and catch them Guys and Gals!
Islands!
Catalina
The island still has plenty of Bonito on the front side as reported before the storms, hope they are still there. Lobster hooping is still very good.
No private or Sport Boat Reports since before the Storms?
San Clemente Island
No Sporties or private boater reports, that I know of.
On the local scene!
Long Beach
The ¾ day boat Native Son out Long Beach Sportfishing landed a 28 pound Halibut, plus a few bass and Sculpin for 13 Anglers fishing: The Pot of Gold Halibut Derby, Thursday, 01-28-10.
The ½ day boat Clemente out of Dana Point Landing had a good day on the Sand Bass Sunday 01-21-10 with a light load of ten anglers catching 40 Bass. Their Saturday day trip was very slow and to be expected with all the run off from the storms creating dirty debris filled water conditions. Bu Sunday things had cleared up enough to find some willing biters.
The ½ day boat Patriot out of Newport Landing found the Sculpin on the chew Sunday 1-24-10 with 14 anglers catching 1 Calico Bass, 6 Sand Bass, 70 Sculpin, and 1 Sole.

The ½ day boat Matt Walsh out of LA Harbor Landing found a good mix of Bass on the chew Sunday 1-24-10 with 14 anglers catching 48 Calico Bass, 19 Sand Bass, and 3 Sculpin. The bass must have been very hungry on Monday 1-25-10, as they really went off, with 17 anglers catching 117 Calico Bass, 53 Sand Bass, and 1 Sculpin. For half day fishing that is extraordinary.
The ½ boat Southern Cal out of Pierpoint landing continues to do well on the Bass and Sculpin. A Sunday trip, 1-17-10, with only thirteen anglers caught 66 Sand Bass and 15 Sculpin, while the Saturday trip, with only nineteen anglers caught 73 Sand Bass, 19 Sculpin, 12 Perch, and 1 Thresher Shark.
The ¾ day Sea Angler is still whacking the sand dabs, as their Sunday trip 1-24-10, with 12 anglers caught 1560 Sand Dabs.
Some of the news papers and TV news showed all the trash and debris that washed up on the beaches and described the water as a big mud hole in many areas over the weekend, which kept a lot of Anglers off the water.
Private boater Bob, with son Tracy did fish the Long Beach Wall on Sunday 1-24-10 and found 25 Calico Bass in the 12 to 15 inch size on a serious chew, all caught on the plastics, lathered in Unibutter. Son Tracy topped the day off with 7+ pound Sand Bass, caught on 12 pound line, good job Tracy. All Bass released to fight another day. Bob indicated the trash in the water was unreal!
Private boater Raul found the LB Wall to his liking Monday night 01-25-10, catching a great mix of Calico and Sand Bass.
Private boater Mike hit the honey hole with a 17 pound Halibut caught on the Horseshoe Sunday 01-24-10.
